Lonely and far away from home, these young men met spontaneously in the &#8220;No Man&#8217;s Land&#8221; between the trenches to sing carols, play football, and toast the holiday together.<\/p>\n<p>American folk musician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folkmusic.com\/\">John McCutcheon<\/a> captured this event on his album <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rounder.com\/2011\/03\/albums\/winter-solstice\">Winter Solstice<\/a><\/em>, released on Rounder Records in 1984. Listening to McCutcheon&#8217;s song &#8220;Christmas in the Trenches,&#8221; the beautiful simplicity of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/1573711\/Truce-in-the-trenches-lets-meet-for-cigars.html\">1914 truce<\/a> still hits home a century later.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-5b22a436ad0b86d76b3321a7627b6476 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; height:550px; max-height:550px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" width=\"600\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sJi41RWaTCs?feature=oembed&color=red&rel=0&controls=1&start=&end=&fs=0&iv_load_policy=0&autoplay=0&mute=0&modestbranding=0&cc_load_policy=1&playsinline=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen referrerpolicy=\"origin\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;There&#8217;s someone coming towards us!&#8217; the front line sentry cried<br \/>\nAll sights were fixed on one lone figure coming from their side<br \/>\nHis truce flag, like a Christmas star, shone on that plain so bright<br \/>\nAs he bravely strode unarmed into the night.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.folkmusic.com\/lyrics\/christmas-trenches\">Full lyrics<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McCutcheon says that he first heard the armistice story from an unassuming janitor backstage at a concert decades ago. &#8220;Christmas in the Trenches&#8221; has become a beloved holiday classic, and it&#8217;s one of McCutcheon&#8217;s most well-known songs.<\/p>\n<p>The entire album deserves being listened to each holiday season, and it&#8217;s no wonder after three decades that it still appears on &#8220;must listen&#8221; Christmas music lists.<\/p>\n<p>McCutcheon&#8217;s delicate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vVvCqspi60E\">hammer dulcimer<\/a> both kindles the warmth of being inside on a late December afternoon as well as conjures the crisp chill of the days leading up to the solstice. He was joined on the recording by members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bachconsort.org\/index.php\">Washington Bach Consort<\/a> and of Paul Reisler&#8217;s folk ensemble <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulreisler.com\/bio.htm\">Trapezoid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Winter Solstice<\/em> features songs as diverse as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.folkmusic.com\/lyrics\/willies-waltz\">Willie&#8217;s Waltz<\/a>,&#8221; a melody written for McCutcheon&#8217;s oldest son, and the popular Hebrew love song &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=unZkA3A2s7A\">Erev Shel Shoshanim<\/a>&#8221; (Evening of Lilies).<\/p>\n<p>As our own war concludes and we move into the holiday season, the lessons of the 1914 Christmas armistice are well worth remembering: peace can be spontaneous and the truest kind is often unofficial.<\/p>\n<p>As McCutcheon sang on <em>Winter Solstice<\/em>: &#8220;The walls they&#8217;d kept between us to exact the work of war, had been crumbled and were gone for evermore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Full <em>Winter Solstice<\/em> track list<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n1.
